U14s - Boys take a walk on the wild side!
RCC 80/10 (18.4) v Beddington CC 69/10 (17)
Having won the toss and in the streaming late afternoon sunshine a generous and enthusiastic Beddington inserted us into bat on an immaculate early season pitch nestling in the gently wooded Beddington park that concealed a hive of activity with simultaneous junior match and nets sessions. These Beddos take their cricket seriously and a stiff competition looked on our hands. We weren't to be proven wrong.
Some accurate bowling met by high spirited slogs led to top order wickets falling like flies. An early demise looked imminent and retreat to the well appointed clubhouse bar. A single was given by the umpire for what should have been a 4 when the fielder's stop came outside the boundary..would that prove critical to the game we had to wonder.
Jim, Alex, Badger and William LT stabilised the ship and Roehampton happily took the extras while keeping the runs ticking over and calmly and carefully batted through to the 19th over.
After brief refreshments the boys returned to the field knowing economical accurate bowling and top drawer fielding to keep the run rate down was the order of the day. With a required rate of just 4 per over it was going to be a tough but not impossible ask.
With strength in depth no fewer than 8 bowlers including the new to club talent of Brandon, up and coming U13 talent of Soham and a freshly ungloved Hugh were bowled all doing a great job of keeping the runs down with superb length and line, pace and spin frustrating the oppo into suicidal runs and catch opportunities many of which with some exceptions (Eddie at cover took a bullet well held) we failed to capitalise on. Will B new behind the stumps kept the extras low with safe hands.
Despite this Beddos were nevertheless well on target after 10 overs but good bowler choice and accuracy, field positions in inner and outer circle and swift returns to stumps stifled opportunistic runs and wickets fell regularly with the run rate dropping to a trickle amid audible frustration from the passionate home crowd..some of whom seemed like they may have more than words to exchange were the exhuberant RCC antics not kept in check.
With a late flurry of runs and 4s, the sun having dropped below the tree line and twilight falling and cold hitting to freeze the field it looked like this was not, despite a valiant fight against the odds, to be our night but continued accurate bowling saw the final wicket fall in the 17th to a jubilant RCC celebration.
What a way to start the season..after a wild start and staring down the barrel the boys added brain to brawn, kept their head and dreamt, filled the unforgiving minute and found their character, turning a cliff edge to a cliffhanger and finally soaring to a well deserved win.
My gosh what an evening..and from just the first match of the season!
Well done boys!
