The Roehampton CC U10s ride into Cheam to face Sutton for their first away game of the season
A couple of firsts this week - our first away game, and the first time we had the required numbers for the league. Similarly to Merstham from our previous match, sportingly Sutton did allow us to bat 2 of our players twice and provided an additional fielder to just about plug the gaps in the field. The Sutton ground on the borders of Cheam and East Ewell proved to be a lovely and picturesque setup with the mini clubhouse - which I think made up for the slight trek to get there.
It wasn't long before we realised we were playing an even more professional outfit than Merstham the week before. The mixture of their excellent and tight bowling and fielding and our somewhat casual approach to batting discipline proved quite disastrous - we lost 15 wickets during our innings. The bright spot was George B and Luca channelling the Wizard Gandalf ('You shall not pass!') with their batting partnership loosing only one wicket and turning things around for the following pairs to get us back up towards positive run territory. Unfortunately, Sutton's batting was simply too strong for us and even though we managed to take 5 wickets (more than the previous week), they cantered away to an easy victory.
My highlights of the match: George B being unneccessarily distraught at thinking he had let down the team when he and Luca got out only once during their 4 batting overs - I think he got over it when he got to bowl one of the extra overs. Zaviel his love of fielding (as it gives him an opportunity to pick the daisies) and the mental gymnastics the oppo were doing to figure out how to shake his hand when it's full of daisies. Oh, and the arm fulls of cookies he ate after the game... George L top bowling and fielding, our ring-in for the day proved more than useful. Rafayel keeping Zavi in-line by reminding him that he's playing cricket. Luca turning our innings around with his boycotesque defence against their best bowlers - he's got the quiet, strong, rock of the team schtick perfected. Issac throwing himself around behind the stumps like a goalie and determining his own fielding position rather than the skipper's Harry fast becoming the little general and some good batting in his second innings Ivo bowling with great consistency and starting to express himself more with the bat Parents some good, if not pleading coaching from the sidelines Well done everyone!
