What a great way to start the season...
By Marc Moderegger
An exceptionally sporting opposition and lots of home team promise made for a great opener!
It was the first outing of the season, we only had 7 players and a first time manager who didn't really know what he was doing. What's this pairs thing? How does that work? Thankfully, we had an exceptionally sporting opposition in Merstham CC U10s, who allowed 3 of our number to bat again and provided us with the additional 3 fielders when we bowled, to allow us to have a proper game, rather than forcing us to forfeit and then have a friendly.
There was some excellent cricket all round (Merstham's catching was particularly good) and there was some hilarious cricket (contributed by both sides) and most importantly everyone enjoyed themselves. Our U10s were certainly an antidote to the pains of the working week! We didn't win, but if you look more closely at the scorecard you'll see that the run difference between the sides was in the wickets we lost - we gave them more chances and they took pretty much all of theirs. This gives me a lot of hope for the season, as Merstham were an immensely professional outfit and our Crew certainly held their own!
My highlights of the match:
Sidd pouring every ounce of his being into chasing down every big hit anywhere near his vicinity
Harry setting some of the most unorthodox fields with millimetre precision and then covering the entire field himself
Ivo stopping a certain four with his ankle whilst bowling, having to go off injured, but sneaking back on so the manager didn't get a chance to give his next over to someone else
Rafayel channelling Whispering Death (Michael Holding) bowling off a (really) long run
Antoni working on intimidating the batsmen by bowling with the biggest possible grin on his face
Luca channelling the no mess, no fuss solid backbone of the team vibe
Zaviel channelling Rafayel coming off an even longer run
Well done everyone!
This week, we're away to Sutton - bring it on!
