A full team (my cup runeth over)
By Marc Moderegger
Spencer host the Roehampton CC U10s at Barn Elms for the Cup leg of a double header
More firsts this week - a full 10 in the team, the first time we've played at Goose Poo Central Barn Elms and the first time our score has been significantly positive!
The U10s arrived at Barn Elms with 10 players in the squad thanks again to one or two (or three) ring-ins. Frankly, I didn't know what to do with that many players - this season seems to be a learning experience for all of us! However, whilst we had 10, Spencer had a few U10s teams from which to pick their best players for the Cup. This had the makings of a pasting (mostly with goose poo)!
Fortunately, the Roehampton team had other ideas, and whilst they were outclassed in almost all aspects of the game, they can certainly hold their heads high. Every week there has been improvement - this week we only lost 7 wickets (less than half the total of the previous week), and the awareness to get behind the stumps when the throw was coming in from the fielders was pleasing to watch - that we can feel good about. And failing that, we can always look forward to playing Spencer again this weekend (as well as again later in the season)!
My highlights of the match:
George B starting to really get into his bowling and attack the ball in the field.
Zaviel the one-handed flick off his feet for a boundary off the oppo's best and fastest bowler and the stoic determination to keep batting (even if it was from the non-strikers end) after being hit in the thigh by the same bowler.
George L some outstanding boundary fielding as the oppo was really going for it.
Sidd the unflinching certainty with with he strode down the wicket to 'face the music'.
Issac again some dynamic wicket-keeping and then after taking off the gloves revelled in the role of back-stop.
Harry relaxing a little on not chasing every ball around the field, but making sure he was always backing up.
Antoni the look on his face when he saw the goose poo on his trousers after sliding in the field to stop a boundary.
Ivo some snazzy fielding and the usual dependable Glenn McGrath-style bowling.
Archie keen to get the gloves on and mad enough to agree to play for us again this weekend.
Ellis some good batting and bowling on debut, scoring some valuable runs for the team.
Great improvement everyone!
