London Scottish won the toss and chose to bat, a decision which was bearing fruit at 100 odd for 2 (the 2 victims falling to Tom Easton’s excellent bowling). However, just as LS were looking to build a decent total, breakthroughs by Scott Downsborough and Saqib Abassi removed the potential architects of that decent score and the momentum was with RCC.
The momentum continued unabated, with Saqib – (on a hat trick at one point, the hat trick ball taking the edge and falling just fractionally short of first slip) – and Greg Easton showing no mercy. Such momentum typified by William Costelloe’s fine diving catch at midwicket snaffled centimetres off the ground. London Scottish 140 all out. A fine bowling and fielding performance by RCC.
Even though tea took a leisurely 40 mins RCC still had plenty of overs to reach the target. With the resumption of play London Scottish helped us on our way with 7 in wides off the first over. Thereafter, scoring off the bat became more of the norm but at pretty much the same rate.
Not much to report really apart from the fact that our openers Clive Henderson and RCC debutant, Sacha Hatteea, were rarely troubled, and when they were they played well, and they comfortably saw us to the target after only 21.2 overs. Clive on 40 and Sacha on 75. Game over by 6.20pm.
The skipper was slightly surprised that no LS players came back for a drink – I can work on that for next year.
As for this year, a tricky decision for man of the match. 75 not out is no mean feat on debut, but our victory was set up by our bowlers and in recognition of that it goes to Saqib.
Man of the Match: Saqib Abbasi
