A good win for the 2s pushed the team up the table to the heady heights of third place in the ladder.
The day began slowly with RCC reduced to 26 for 3 and 77 for 6. In fact, without a mature knock of 46 from Nick Aspinall the day would have been an absolute disaster. Eventually, RCC posted a lowish score of 145 hoping, but not quite believing that it would be enough to win the day.
At tea, we talked about how the bowlers would need to dig out the team and put in a performance. They did not disappoint. Led by Arran Pratt (3 for 21) and then Zak Khan (4 for 13), RCC fired out the Farncombe batting lineup, hitting the stumps on numerous occasions. So far this season it has been the batters that have been in charge but finally, today, the bowlers came to the party.
Arran Pratt put in his best performance for Roehampton; bowling cutters and getting some shape on the ball. But, it was particularly pleasing to see the 2s leading wicket taker of last season back to his best - with a change of spikes Zak was back!
None of this fightback would have been possible if Nick Aspinall had not persevered to grind the score up to a semi-reasonable target. A lesson for everyone in not giving up on an innings and fighting hard to keep a team in a match. As someone once said; 'If winning was easy, losers would do it...'
Man of the match: Nick Aspinall.
