Roehampton CC 2s win a tight game by 5 runs

As a sign of things to come this season, RCC played a pretty strong Horley side. Now that the 2s have been promoted into a more competitive league (Fuller’s division 1) we can expect a tough game every Saturday for the remainder of the season.

Learning from mistakes from last Saturday’s game against Putney, the 2s batted with more solidity. The innings was built around an excellent score of 99 not out by Marc Moderegger. Batting in partnerships, Moderegger built steadily during the afternoon before breaking lose with powerful drives over extra-cover and forceful cutting through cover-point. It was a shame that right at the end of the innings Moderegger couldn’t quite get his bat on ball to notch up what would have been a well-deserved century. Ultimately, the team were pleased with a score of 194 in 45 overs which RCC felt would take some getting.

It was to Horley’s credit that they came so close. Excellent scores of 63, 43 and 37 from Paul Kirkham, Ali Cheema and John Remfry took them to a hair’s breadth of winning the game. RCC bowled too many extras. 21 wides nearly lost us the game. This will have to be an area the 2s will really have to work hard on in training and over the coming matches. Ultimately, it was an inspired period of bowling from Ross Cameron (4 for 41) that brought RCC back in with a fighting chance. When Remfry was finally bowled by Hemish Gunasekara (4 for 16) the game was ultimately over and RCC 2s had bagged an important 20 points.

The matches come thick and fast with a tough fixture away at table topping Old Tiffinains to look forward to next Saturday.
