Roehampton 1st XI: 235-8 (45 overs) Weybridge Vandals 1st XI: 146 all out (38 overs) RCC won by 89 runs

First league game of the season and the new format of 45 overs had us all very excited and rearing to go. The skipper lost the toss (again) and RCC were put in with rain imminent. We got off to a steady start, but with some early wickets falling, the nerves started jingling a little. However, this was short lived as Sean “Bumps” Farrell continued where he left off last week and had the Weybridge fielders searching for balls in the Putney Heath shrubbery on a number of occasions. A few more wickets, but Sacha Hateea joined Bumps and steadied the ship and upped the rate. Sean was then joined by Jules Vereker, who was only recruited into the team the night before due to injuries to other players and what a contribution he made. A quick fire 50 with some excellent running between the wickets had the Vandals fielders making a lot of mistakes. After Sean fell for another excellent 80, it was left to Nick Freeborn and Ed Lynam and instead of our total being near the 160 mark, we managed an excellent score of 235 for 8 in our 45 overs.

Exactly 16 minutes were lost to rain, so Vandals had a revised target of 215 to chase in 41 overs. Some tight bowling from new ball pairing of Tom Easton and Will Hunting and soon the Vandals run-rate was approaching the 7 mark. Wickets by Tom, Will and Mr Cricket himself Sean Farrell and soon Vandals were in a lot of bother. We soon had them 9 down for under 100 and victory was in our sights. A little cameo by numbers 10 and 11 pushed the Vandals total up to 140, but Will Hunting had the last laugh by removing number 11s off stump in his first over of his second spell, giving him RCC career best figures of 3 for 17.

A great all round team performance with contributions by everyone. An excellent way to kick off the new league season and we now look forward to Thames Ditton.

Man of the match: Sean Farrell
