RCC won the toss and inserted Ripley. Ripley 163 all out in 37.4 overs (J Liddell 5-53, P Fuchs 2-12, S Stevens 2-46) RCC 164 for 1 in 33.4 overs (S Farrell 71*, S Costello 35, P Dorsett 34*)

This is about as comprehensive as it gets. After the cup game, where Ripley chased down 265, we knew this could be quite tough and we would have to play well to win. We did.

The skipper finally won a toss and was torn (the pitch looked really good), but decided to stick Ripley in. Ripley were clearly looking to score runs quickly, but with playing a lot of shots, wickets were falling with Sam Stevens and Tom Easton bowling well with the new ball. Sam especially looked fierce and was getting quicker and quicker during his spell. Ripley were 2 down and enter their South African overseas pro who single handedly won them the cup game a few weeks ago. However, this time, he was not so lucky and Sam had him trapped in front for 9 (although he was reluctant to leave the field). Runs continued to flow, courtesy of the Ripley skipper, but wickets continued to fall at the same time. Scott Costello was excellent behind the stumps taking 3 catches and dealing with some awkward bounces. Fuchsy bowled his usual stuff of not giving too much away, while James “the destroyer” Liddle was picking up wickets at regular intervals from the other end (after the skipper had worked out after 1 over that he should be bowling with the wind). James’ fifth wicket was courtesy of the catch of the season so far. Running backwards from second slip, Sean Farrell pulled off an incredible diving catch (although he should have been fined for the pose afterwards). The innings was wrapped up shortly after 3:45, giving RCC 50 minutes to bat before tea and needing to score 164 in 58 overs.

The opening partnership of Sean Farrell and Scott Costello got through the 13 overs before tea relatively easily and we were sitting comfortably at 44 for none. Only 120 to get in 45 overs. After tea, things didn’t improve for Ripley with both Bumps and Scott looking in ominous form and the target of 164 looking at least 50 short. A sharp catch in the slips had Scott dismissed for a very well played 35, but then it was just the turn of Phil Dorsett (who had to endure endless sledging) and Bumps to finish things off. Both Phil and Bumps were very harsh on the Ripley bowlers and their plan of bowling short was proving useless. With 5 needed to win, the Ripley pro “bowled” a rather petulant delivery (he threw it) down legside for 5 no-balls. RCC had wrapped up the innings with 24 overs to spare and Bumps scored a brilliant 71 not out off 92 balls and Phil a quick fire 34 not out off 31 balls.

That is 3 wins on the bounce, which puts up in the right half of the table. The great thing about this team is that unlike the other teams who are totally reliant on their overseas pro, we are truly a united team and each week, we all contribute, be it with bat, ball or in the field.
