RCC 186 all out in 51.5 overs (J Vereker 35, S Stevens 32, P Dorsett 31, J Melhorn 31) Wallington 158 for 8 in 44 overs (S Stevens 4-31, P Fuchs 2-32

On the most perfect cricketing day of the season, we travelled to Wallington full of confidence and eager to pick up 20 points against the bottom-placed team. The skipper was in two minds about what to do should he win the toss, but fortunately that decision was taken away from him after Wallington won the toss and elected to bowl. On a very fast outfield and short square boundaries, we knew that 180 would be the minimum.

RCC got off to a flyer courtesy of Phil Dorsett who was smashing anything short and he raced to 31 off just 28 balls before being caught. The other opener, James “Sponge” Melhorn was doing a superb job in anchoring and making sure he batted some time, whilst scoring runs. Wallington soon pegged us back and slowed our run scoring, bowling 10 consecutive maidens (thanks to a spin bowler whose action was very questionable). However, on his first team debut, Mitch Hunt soon had us scoring freely again with some fantastic stroke play, but after his dismissal and James’, it was left to Jules Vereker and Sam Stevens to finish off the innings. They both combined some big hitting and some excellent running between the wickets and RCC had accumulated a very respectable 186.

The Wallington openers were not going to die wondering and were attempting some huge shots, although Sam Stevens and Tom Easton were far too good for them and they played and missed at most deliveries. Soon, however, RCC had them 4 down and we were certainly pushing for victory. A late flourish by their skipper soon had Wallington going again, but their only target was the winning draw score of 158, while RCC were pushing for victory, albeit sacrificing the winning draw and not worrying too much about conceding runs. A late wicket by JV, thanks to some great work behind the stumps by Phil Dosett, had Wallington 8 down and we were in with a shout, but Wallington managed to get to their target of 158 and they were happy enough with that.

Although we played well, this is a game that felt like a loss and certainly 20 points lost.
