Mitcham CC 220/4 (20 overs) v RCC 70/5 (14 overs)

Our final Surrey league match of the season saw the boys travel to Mitcham's historic pitch, the oldest in the world, the club having played cricket on Mitcham Cricket Green since 1685.

It being holiday season the handful of our boys available were supplemented by Mitcham's keen mixed age group (14-17) squad so..Ritcham, Moehampton..game on!

Having won the toss Mitcham elected to bat on a hard dry wicket, with a beautifully green and swift outfield, and while our attack got off to a promising start with 2 wickets in the first 4 overs, the innings was dominated by the Mitcham top bats with 50s from Maywon and Anamullah and several sixes hit flat and straight out of the ground, somehow magically missing any of the cars or houses surrounding the pitch and swiftly followed by familiar ball hunts, only this time with our brambles replaced by rather more suburban front gardens and parked vehicles.

For our batting innings Ben C generously gave Mitcham first crack. Again, the highlight was the accuracy of the Mitcham bowling attack limiting run scoring opportunities, though there were some well worked singles and rotation of strike. A swarm of flying ants delayed proceedings with boys replacing helmets and gloves to free themselves of these unexpected interlocutors. In fact, there was no shortage of wildlife with a flock of 20 brighly coloured parakeets making frequent appearances overhead.

The various delays coupled with 8 overs worth of rebowled extras meant that nature had the final say and play was called off due to bad light a little after sunset, with two RCC names on the scorecard:

Ben C not out
Kyan not out

Over the years our cohort has developed our strengths through competition against a variety of adversaries. It was perhaps poetic that for our final match as Colts we unite with, and such wisdom as we have acquired overflow and be shared with, our 'opposition' in pursuit of arguably an even more noble end than our individual, or even our team's, development and betterment. Rather, the development of our sport and the human kinship, spirit and ideas from which it stems.

Well done boys!

For our RCC U16 cohort the league season and their time as Colts is over. I've really enjoyed co-managing the team with Gayle and Bharath for the last six years, and seeing so many of the boys develop as cricketers and indeed into young gentlemen. I hope many will go on to enjoy this great game and its spirit as adults in whatever capacity.

To everyone, boys and parents and coaches, from our U10 days (and before - boys have always played up!) who has played, scored, organised drinks, umpired, managed behind the scenes, written emails and match reports, got boys to matches and encouraged ..thank you!

It's been an honour and a pleasure..see you on the pitch!
