RCC 132/7 v TMW CC 131/8

Our first away match of the season saw the match team make the trek south to the rural idyll of south Croydon.

Winning the toss, Hugh (captain) elected to bat and we clocked up a respectable total with some outstanding contributions and plenty of urgent well snatched singles, particularly towards the end of the innings. There were a couple of easy run out opportunities early on in the contest however TMW were unable to capitalise on them.

With plenty left in the tank, the question of whether we might have reached headier climes had we put our riskier big hitters in a little earlier arose, however, having just 10 men, perhaps caution to ensure we played out the full 20 innings (something we've historically not always accomplished) was the order of the day.

The TMW chase started disconcertingly well with 18 clocked up in the first over, suggesting we may be heading home in time for an early supper however as the cobwebs blew off and the looseners loosened bowling arms we began to see that the talent and potential of our bowlers was up to that of our batsmen, taking wickets where needed to reduce the run rate and bowling accurately and economically in the final overs with appropriate field positions to stifle the run rate.

Some confusion with the scoring (TMW were scoring wides and no-balls as 2) led to some frantic recalculations of the runs required to successfully chase in the final over, however some outstanding bowling and fielding meant the last ball's bye was successfully gathered and dispatched to the right end to achieve what ended up a casual run-out on an attempted second run.

Great team effort, parents included, car sharing and dealing with vagaries of London traffic to get the boys down in time to warm up.

Played one, won one and top of the league.

Well done boys!

Room for improvement
Clear calls to avoid run outs
Optimising use of high strike-rate batsmen
Bowler warm ups to reduce extras
Defensive in-out field positions to offer protection from loose deliveries off new bowlers and accomplished batsmen
