Improving fielding and teamwork bringing better balance to the competition
After our trip out beyond Croydon, it was good to be home again at Roehampton. The boys were excited to be playing on the main pitch and I was worried about being an umpire for the first time. First up the toss – which we won with Harry calling heads. A minor but important victory as it meant we got to field first. Some good fielding and bowling saw the opposition restricted to a total of just 286. A couple of runouts and a few wickets really helped this week, and the enthusiasm of the boys to limit the oppositions scoring opportunities was great to see. In particular Ivo getting a wicket as part of our first bowling pair was an encouraging start to the game. If we can make some of the more difficult catches stick the boys will be able to limit teams even more. But overall a really good day in the field.
At the break we were treated to iced buns, baked fresh this morning by George’s Mum – also known as Victoria – and devoured by both sides. Now reenergised both sides were raring to go and there was much admirable defence and many good shots against some good bowling. Though one lesson we learnt was not to stay out of the crease after backing up! In general, I think the calling for runs is getting better with some sharp singles starting to be taken that weren’t being run at the start of the season. This commendable ambition meant a couple of runouts but that is sometimes the price to pay for bold calling! As ever we were hurt by the wickets but this game was more evenly matched with the boys showing clear signs of improvement in all areas.
Highlights today included: George B Accurate with the ball and stoic with the bat. Antoni Great fielding a couple of big hits. Rafi Great bowling – pacey and accurate with a couple of wickets Luca Some powerful shots and good running Zavi Consistent and accurate bowling Sidd Very accurate with the ball and the straightest bat of the day. One shot so straight it hit the opposite wicket. Daniel Brave in opening the batting keeping out some quick bowling. Ivo Clean bowled in his second over which really lifted the boys spirits. Harry Some really good shots and excellent calling for runs. Isaac As per last week some excellent and accurate bowling in the final, most difficult, over.
Learning Experiences: When backing up always get back to your crease. Umpiring is far harder than you think!
