Start of a bright season for the Roehampton U10s
By Sheriar (father of Ryen) Pestonji
A beautiful summer's day greeted the team for the first match of the U10s 2016 season. A lot of new faces this year and it's very much welcomed. We had a number of "friend-pairs" for the first match so we tried to keep them together for the batting pairs as much as possible. Ryen was selected captain for this match, as since he is my son, I was assured of matching his face to the name immediately :) Ryen lost the toss and we were put into bat.
Charlie and Daniel opened the batting and got us off to a decent start. Tom and Iain then took attack to the Old Ruts bowlers by hitting four 4s between them (in addition to 4 byes). Tom was particularly severe on the fourth bowler of the pair. Nicky B and Rory, both inexperienced, then came into bat for the 3rd pairing and held their own. Rory must have just been getting his eye in as he smacked a spectacular boundary of the last ball of the pair. Sam and James came in s the 4th pair. They faced probably the best of the Old Ruts' bowling. These two youngsters did well under a heavy weather attack. Ryen and Nikolas then finished off the first innings with lots of singles and 2s, and most importantly no outs. In the end we scored 238 (starting from 200) with 6 wickets lost (36 runs).
The Old Ruts' batting innings got off to a solid start. Their first two pairs got to our 238 without losing a wicket. The boys showed a lot of character is keeping Old Ruts to just 25 more runs in their next 3 pairs. Daniel, Charlie and Tom all took a wicket and there were two excellent run outs by the boys. The last 5 overs we put our best bowlers on and in that period the opposition scored -2. A promise of things to come in the season :)
Tom is man of the match from Roehampton CC with his big hits and picking up a wicket also. However, all the boys should be proud of the way they played in the season opener.
